Integration Meditation: Connecting with Your Whole Self

The medicine wheel in Maya thought focuses on bringing balance. The Universe, whether considering the Vast Expanse of All that is, or contemplating the Mirror of The Vast All which is held within you, can be thought of in 4 energies, each having its’ own focus, but all being necessary for life in balance.

Today we will look at one aspect of the wheel, the part that describes your basic humanity, your core. This includes your thoughts, your spirit, your emotions, and your body. This meditation is simple and yet powerful. It will help you identify where you are in alignment and where you need to gently encourage yourself to connect. As you consciously do this simple meditation, you will feel what is aligned and what is not. Simply be in the moment and listen to your inner being. It knows and it will direct you.

4 directions and center

If you like, you can use 4 candles in the four colors of the medicine wheel: red, white, black or blue, and yellow. This will increase the strength of this meditation. I have 4 four colored jars that I put tealights in. You can also use white candles (in a jar or glass bowl for safety) and put some colored treasures with them in the appropriate colors. They can be crystals, flowers, or anything else that is in the proper color. If you prefer not to use candles, you can simply use colored crystals, flowers, or other treasures. This is a good option if you want to put them on the floor around you and you have carpet.

You will stand in the center of the candles. If you cannot put them on the floor, consider putting them on something stable like furniture that you set up in the four directions for this meditation.

  • The red candle/treasure goes to the east. This is where your thoughts reside.

  • The white candle/treasure goes to the north. This is where your spirit resides.

  • The blue or black candle/treasure goes to the west. This is where your emotions reside.

  • The yellow candle goes to the south. This is where your body resides.

When all four parts of yourself are in balance, when they are all healthy and cared for, you move into a state of wellness. As you do this meditation, notice how you feel at each point. Simply observe.

Meditation

You can read the text or listen to the video (or both!) And don't forget to scroll all the way down for final thoughts.

Light all of your candles and stand in the center.

Close your eyes and focus on relaxing your body completely while straight and tall, your arms relaxed at your sides. Feel your feet grounded, connecting with the underworld of Xibalba. Feel the top of your head emitting white, radiant light which flows into the overworld of Flower Mountain.

Breathe in through your nose, filling your belly with breath. Hold your breath for a moment at the top and then release your breath through your nose fully and hold for a moment at the bottom. Do this three more times, each time filling your belly with breath. Each time holding for a moment and the top and then exhaling fully and resting for a moment at the bottom.

Return to normal, easy breathing.

Face the red candle (east). This is where your thoughts reside. Focus on your thoughts. Focus on coming into alignment with your thoughts. Focus on being connected to your thoughts. Greet them and allow their energy to be with you. Smile slightly. When you finish, take a deep breath through your nose and then open your mouth and release it all at once with a bit of sound, a sigh.

Face the white candle (north). This is where your spirit resides. Focus on your spirit. Focus on coming into alignment with your spirit. Focus on being connected to your spirit. Greet her and allow her energy to be with you. Smile slightly. When you finish, take a deep breath through your nose and then open your mouth and release it all at once with a bit of sound, a sigh.

Face the blue or black candle (west). This is where your emotions reside. Focus on your emotions. Focus on coming into alignment with your emotions. Focus on being connected to your emotions. Greet them and allow their energy to be with you. Smile slightly. When you finish, take a deep breath through your nose and then open your mouth and release it all at once with a bit of sound, a sigh.

Face the yellow candle (south). This is where your body resides. Focus on your body. Focus on coming into alignment with your body. Focus on being connected to your body. Greet it and allow its energy to be with you. Smile slightly. When you finish, take a deep breath through your nose, and then open your mouth and release it all at once with a bit of sound, a sigh.

When you finish, bring your hands to prayer at your heart, bow your head slightly and say thank you. You can say it in Mayan, “Yum Botik”

Final Thoughts

Doing this meditation will bring up feelings at each point. You may notice you feel more connected to some parts of yourself. You may notice uncomfortable feelings come up when you consider parts of yourself. Simply observe how you feel.

When you finish this meditation, you may choose to be extra kind to any part of yourself that you feel needs some extra love.

Do this meditation often to check in on yourself and to foster integration of all the parts that make you whole.
