ok – the loyal guide and joyful protector

Series: Glyphs of the Maya – Drawing the Day Signs into Your Life

Key Words: Guide • Judge • Protect • Friendship • Fun

Ok is the loyal dog — guide of the night sun through the underworld, protector, and wise companion. He is the faithful friend who walks beside you in both light and shadow, offering guidance, protection, and joy along the way.

Ok is also the most sensual and sexual of all the nawales, embodying the fullness of the human senses. He reminds us that life is to be enjoyed — to laugh, to play, to connect deeply with others. His energy is both grounding and freeing, balancing loyalty with a love for pleasure and adventure.

Ok days are ideal for:

  • Looking for hidden truths.

  • Seeking or giving advice.

  • Spending time with friends.

  • Protecting your loved ones.

  • Asking for freedom from poverty, misfortune, or bad habits.

  • Playing and having fun.

  • Short distance travel.

  • Deep sensual or sexual connection.

Mayan glyph for Ok

drawing the ok glyph

The Ok glyph carries the spirit of loyalty, guidance, and joy — a symbol of the faithful companion who sees with clarity and loves without condition.

How to draw it:

  1. Draw the inner square and the core or heart of the glyph.

  2. Draw the outer square around it.

  3. Draw the breath scrolls flowing outward — these are the life-force of the glyph. In Maya tradition, the breath scrolls show that the glyph is alive and breathing. Without them, it is only a static image; with them, it becomes a living, breathing presence that can work with you.

A note about these glyph images:The drawings you see here are from my personal grimoire. They are on lined paper because they were created during my own magical practice — each line a record of connection. These glyphs are not copied from printed sources; they were drawn by hand, holding the intention and energy of the day sign itself. Some are simplified slightly so you can draw them more easily, even if you’ve never worked with Maya glyphs before. The simplification does not take away their power — the act of drawing them with intention is what awakens their energy.

As you draw, imagine Ok trotting beside you, eyes bright, ready to protect and guide you while sharing the joy of the road.

using the glyph’s energy

in your home

  • Place it near your front door for protection and welcome.

  • Keep it in social areas to encourage friendship and laughter.

  • Hang it in your bedroom to enhance sensual connection.

on your body

  • Mark it on your forehead or heart when you need guidance or protection.

  • Wear it on a pendant or charm to carry Ok’s loyalty and joy with you.

  • Draw it on your hands before travel or a social gathering.

other ways

  • Carve it into a candle for protection or friendship rituals.

  • Draw it on a letter or card to a loved one to bless your connection.

  • Write a habit, challenge, or misfortune you want freedom from, then draw the glyph over it and burn the paper as an act of release.

awakening the glyph

To call forth Ok’s energy:

  1. Sit with the glyph before you.

  2. Inhale deeply, feeling the loyalty and vitality of the dog at your side.

  3. Exhale with the words Ahaw Ok — “Lord Ok” — addressing the day god with respect and inviting the guide to walk with you.

    • In Yucatec Maya, Ahaw means “Lord” and is the proper form of address when speaking directly to the Day Gods.

  4. Repeat three times.

  5. Whisper: “Ahaw Ok — guide my steps, protect my path, and fill my life with joy.”

This unites the image of the glyph, the breath scrolls of life-force, and the sacred name of the day lord, activating Ok’s guidance and joy.

reflection

Ok asks: “Who walks beside you, and how do you honor that bond?”

Journal about the guides, friends, and loved ones in your life — human or spirit — and how you can strengthen your connection with them.

Remember, when you draw the glyph, you bring it to life.

Hugs and Butterflies,

laura
